Jill Scott is the only daughter from her mom Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia in Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. She was raised by her grandmother and she was an only child. Scott was a graduate of the Philadelphia High School for Girls. She then enrolled at Temple University. In addition to working two part-time jobs, Scott took classes in secondary teaching in Temple University. She hoped to be the high school's English teacher. This dream was however cut short when after three years of studies and as an assistant to teachers she dropped out of university. After starting her career performing at live poetry performances and eventually, she teamed up with Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. The two ended up working together and co-writing You Got Me. In the Roots show, she revealed herself as an artist. In the following years, she managed to secure collaborations such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She also gained experience in performing through the Canada production of Broadway's show Rent. She was also the very first signing agent for Hidden Beach Recordings.
